Developers across the country are investing in urban properties by adding new uses to existing landmarks. Chicago’s Willis Tower, formerly the Sears Tower, is getting a $500 million makeover that will open the ground floor to tourists. This revamp is to include some 300,000 square feet of new retail, dining and entertainment space at the base of the tower, a 30,000-square-foot outdoor deck and a glassed-in atrium. The developers will put some of the retail into a three-level glass box planned for the 43-year-old iconic building’s southeast corner, and three floors of underground retail are in the plans too. “The significant investment and realization of this vision will reinforce Willis Tower as a civic destination and the ultimate place to work with unique retail and entertainment experiences,” said Blackstone, one of the building’s owners, in a statement.
